Field Geology

Credit: 2 TO 8 hours.

Group field study in a prominent geologic locality; includes in-class meetings, student-led presentation, and field trip; trips run during spring break, winter break, in mid-end May or intercession; dates depend on location.

May be repeated. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Field trip fee required.

Field Trip Fee estimated to be $800 - $2500, depending on the destination and duration of the trip.

Credit: 4 hours Section Info: Geology field trip to Scotland will run following spring commencement ceremonies. The class will explore world-class localities in the west and northwest of Scotland. Attention will be focused on; (1) Structures in the Moine Thrust Belt associated with the Caledonian Orogeny and formation of Pangaea, (2) Sedimentary relationships illustrating the Hutton's Great Unconformity associated with the Caledonian clastic wedge and (3) the Teriary Igneous Province and associated sediments related to initiation of the Icelandic Plume and opening of the Atlantic Ocean. The trip assumes a background in geology and is intended primarily for geology majors and graduate students. Prerequisites: At least one 400-level geology course, and/or permission of the instructor. 4hrs. Field trip fee required, $1300. Meeting time is TBA, but we plan to meet once weekly in the evenings prior to the 10-day trip leaving Monday, May 19, 2014.
