Topic: Introduction to East Asian History-Korea. Korea has a long and rich history that provides a unique vantage point for understanding major processes in East Asia and the world. This course provides a introduction to Korean history from antiquity to the present. In the first part of the semester, we will delve into key topics from the Kory? Dynasty (935-1392) and the Chos?n Dynasty (1392-1910), including collective (or ?proto-national?) identity, Confucian statecraft and Confucianization, and the Tonghak religion and rebellions. In the second part of the semester, we will explore the major transformations in politics, culture, and society during the 20th and 21st centuries. Nationalism, colonialism, the Cold War and national division, gender identities, authoritarian rule and, democratization, popular culture, and globalization are among the topics that we will cover. This class is offered via video-conference and is hosted by the University of Wisconsin. This course meets from Jan. 21 - May 7, 2014
