Section Info:
Contact improvisation is a collaborative dance form where movers kinetically respond to each other in ever new and changing ways. Contact Improvisation (CI) draws practices from martial arts, modern dance, somatic techniques, social dance, and experimental performance. Since its emergence in the U.S. in the early 1970?s, CI has spread widely. Communities of practitioners come together for ?contact jams? and festivals all over the world. CI has been integrated into professional dance training programs, applied in performance and choreography, and hybridized with social dance forms. This course will introduce students to CI principles such as listening and following impulses with another mover, weight sharing and counterbalance, gravity and momentum, safe falls and lifts, moving in spherical space, compositional awareness, and ensemble improvisation skills. We will also develop solo practices that we can carry into duets and open dancing with the whole group.
