Cross-Cultural Thematics

Credit: 3 hours.

Explores a combination of western and non-western literature through the focus on a shared theme, exploring differences in treatment both within and among different cultures. Two such thematic focuses are offered in rotation; one on concepts of love and one on ways of writing about death. Both themes introduce students to a wide array of famous texts from different cultures and also offer some varied perspectives for their own inevitable thoughts on these major topics.

May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary. Students may register in more than one section per term.

Section Info: Topic: Conspiracy Narratives around the World. Aliens. Foreign governments. Dolphins.Terrorists. In this class we will explore narratives of conspiracy and paranoia across national contexts to investigate how conspiracy works. How do we tell stories of conspiracy? How do these stories construct plausible explanations of the world around us? How do these stories differ across countries? Why do conspiracy narratives sometimes just feel right? Why is paranoid thinking at the center of how we relate to technical progress and political systems? These are some of the questions that will guide our class. Readings and films from Argentina, United States, Russia, and Mexico.
