Advanced Surface Science
Section Info:
Surfaces, Interfaces and Colloidal Science, Pre-req: CEE 442, 443, 444, or consent of instructor. The goal of the course is to provide a sound basis of the fundamental and advanced principles of interfacial and colloid phenomena. The course will deal with surface adsorption of organic molecules, interacting forces between colloidal particles and organic molecules in the aquatic environment, as well as functionalization of the solid-liquid interface to ?tailor? adsorption and surface interactions. Surface Biology will be addressed as well. Besides the theoretical background, the students will be provided with knowledge about the state-of-the-art experimental tools in surface and colloidal science. The applications are directly related to Environmental Engineering and Science to help students to identify the connections between surface science, other courses in their program and their own research.

Section Title:
Cyber Physical-Systems Tech
Section Info:
This course explores the applications of computer systems that interact with the physical world, identified as a key emerging research area by the National Science Foundation. Topics covered include hardware and software for networks of smart embedded devices, mobile and social sensing, autonomous robotics, and application case studies of these technologies, with a focus on practical issues in the design and deployment of cyber-physical systems (CPS) technology for Civil Engineering. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of current technologies and ongoing research in the field. The study of CPS fundamentals will be supplemented with detailed case studies covering the real-world application of these techniques in areas such as smart structures, environmental monitoring, and traffic monitoring. The course will provide students with the in-depth knowledge and practical experience necessary to utilize CPS technologies in conducting research.

Section Info:
Transportation Soil Stabilization This graduate course aims to introduce the theory, techniques and practical applications of chemical and mechanical stabilization of geomaterials ? soils and aggregates/rocks ? used in the construction and maintenance of transportation facilities, i.e., roads, railroads, and airfields. Chemical stabilization includes the use of chemicals, admixtures such as lime and fly ash, and emulsions as compaction aids to soils, as binders and water repellents, and as a means of modifying the behavior of soil. Mechanical stabilization deals with the use of non-biodegradable reinforcement, such as geosynthetics and fibers, of geomaterials to improve strength.
