Topic: The 1990s. Wedged between the Fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11, the 1990s was the decade that gave us the internet, the "global," the European Union and NAFTA, the Human Genome Project, the Kyoto Protocol, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, cell phones, digital photography, Generation X, Matthew Shepard, girl power, relational aesthetics, gangsta rap, and grunge. In this seminar, we will take a broad approach to fine art of this period, attempting to understand how artists responded to a variety of political, cultural, and technological currents, by examining their work in relation to seminal texts of the era by authors such as Frederic Jameson, Francis Fukuyama, Martin Jay, Peggy Phelan, Lucy Lippard, Nicolas Bourriaud, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri. Historical tensions to be discussed include globalization and anti-globalization movements, transformations in identity-based politics, interest in the local and site specific, the rise of the information economy and dot-com, the fall of communism and expansion of neoliberalism, and the rise of biennials and spectacular architect-designed museums. We will also think about the methodological questions that arise in the process of historicizing a period in transition from the contemporary to the historical.
