Topic: Curriculum Theory and Art Education. Online course. Meets virtually Tuesday nights 5:00-7:40. What is the relationship of trends in curriculum theory and art education? Curriculum, previously thought of a fixed "material" that was passed along from teacher to student is now complicated by the reconceptualization of curriculum as an living and constantly transforming engagement with the world. As such, many artists have turned toward curriculum and pedagogy as a means to understand and make their proposals in the world. This course seeks to decipher critical texts in curriculum theory that open up new possibilities for both art education and contemporary art practice. As an online course offered through the Art Education department of the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, this course will be enriched by the multiple perspectives of the participants outside of the UIUC "in-residence" cohort. Practitioners, teachers, artists, and scholars interested in the pliability of the curriculum and art intersection are encouraged to join us. The course will be conducted as an online seminar with regular meeting hours to discuss readings and expand the subject's discourse. Two theoretical papers will also be expected from each student.
