Topic: Primitivism and its Discontents. This seminar examines the construction of primitivism as an artistic practice and its art-historical account. We will focus especially on the encounter between Africa and Europe in the making of the global "primitive." Key questions to be considered: What "work" does the category of the primitive do, since it aims at subversion even as it consolidates entire regions of the world as "other"? What is the relationship between the politics of colonialism and artistic practice? How do artists from societies defined as "other" negotiate becoming the "primitive"? Can the category of the "primitive" be productively re-appropriated by artists today?
