Field Experience

Credit: 1 OR 2 hours.

Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in the same or subsequent semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

The course will focus on birds, with the secondary purpose of exposing students to a variety of common field techniques and giving in depth training in banding and radio telemetry. These are marketable job skills that are often required or preferred in today's wildlife job market. This class will meet at the Anita Purves Nature Center, (1505 N. Broadway in Urbana). Recently, efforts have been made by residents and the City of Champaign to address that flooding. This course addresses urban storm water management from an ecologically sustainable perspective. Students will explore the human dimensions of this issue by applying social theories regarding attitudes, behaviors and norms, environmental awareness and education, and participatory processes in social movements. Applied survey techniques, message development and transmission, and environmental marketing will be utilized to address existing problems. Location Pending	Schooley, R	Part of Term: B Date Range: 10/20/14-12/10/14 Special Approval: Instructor Approval Required Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Wildlife Conserv&Comm-Botswana Section Info: WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND COMMUNITIES BOTSWANA The course provides students with a hands-on research experience through a 2-week winter excursion on wildlife conservation and communities in Botswana. Students will attend a 5-day lecture series at the research camp, with field excursions, to prepare them for being part of a research team and to understand the dynamic coexistence of humans and wildlife. Then, students will join the research team for 5 days to learn field techniques, collect data and understand the reality and vision behind field research. The student?s time in the field will focus on the two main objectives of Wildlife ACT: (1) implementing a standardized biodiversity monitoring protocol for Botswana?s Department of Wildlife & National Parks, and (2) conducting human-wildlife conflict studies and implementing mitigation strategies with the University of Botswana?s Okavango Research Institute (ORI). Students will learn how to set up a field research project, from project design to data collection and implementation, and will gain valuable skills and knowledge. STUDY ABROAD FEES APPLY.

Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Watershed Water Quality Section Info: Using the Embarras River watershed, students will learn about all aspects of the watershed that affect water quality, along with methods to reduce nutrients in the river. We will make field and laboratory measurements, understand the sources of pollution (sewage treatment, agriculture), learn about how people view and utilize the watershed, and see how the biology of the stream responds to nutrient and sediment inputs. Methods to reduce nutrient losses from agricultural fields such as wetlands and bioreactors will be examined. Restriction(s): Restricted to Natural Resrcs & Environ Sci major(s).
