Special topics course focusing on cultural, economic, historical, political, and social themes and issues that influence or are influenced by the media. Topics will vary.

Approved for letter and S/U grading. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: One year of Media courses, Junior or senior standing in the College of Media, or consent of instructor.

Digital photography can play a major role in any undergraduate research project and the impact of images can be heightened with solid understanding of the foundations and methodology of the medium. This course explores creative artistry as a means toward personal expression and scholarship. Research, as defined by the University of Illinois, encompasses this broader definition of scholarship to include creative works. In this course we will go beyond "traditional research" and produce "creative works" as scholarship and for fun. This is a lecture course where hands-on digital photography assignments will help you put class material into practice. Digital photography will be explained and explored through presentation, discussion and critique. No prior photography experience is needed. You must provide your own camera and have access to a computer with a photo editing app like Apple iPhoto or Microsoft Photo Gallery for example. This will be a fun course where you will gain insight into your creativity.

The promise of so much easily accessible information quickly transforms into peril as we wonder just how to make sense of all that abundance, how to find the signal amidst all the noise. This is a particular challenge for journalism, which is competing with ever-increasing numbers of players in the news and information arena who may - or, more often, may not - be providing news that is credible and reliable. Our aim is to build a better understanding of what makes news reliable and credible and, in doing so, help equip people to make smarter decisions and engage in democratic society.

Workshop Section Info: This course is an independently paced workshop where students will work on developing individual documentary video projects. Students will begin by taking their individual project ideas and, learning the necessary research and pre-production skills, will create a fully realized, detailed documentary proposal, one that could be pitched to funders, production entities, or presentation outlets. Once their proposal is approved, students can then move into the production phase, taking the project as far as their time and skills permit. Prerequisite: Art 350 (Writing with Video), JOUR 440 or permission of instructor for students with verifiable previous video production experience. Restriction(s): Restricted to students with Junior or Senior class standing.
