Genomic Biology Workshop This course will explore genomic and genetic databases and bioinformatics resources, as well as analytical tools that are available to enrich and accelerate modern biological research. We will focus primarily on high-throughput sequencing and its applications, with focus on transcriptome and chromatin analysis; tools for functional predictions from the resulting gene lists will also be explored. Lectures will focus on the experimental methods and the basics of relevant analytical tools, supported by reading of recent literature. In-class exercises and assignments will focus on database use and the application of simple analytical software, beginning with the Galaxy platform and transitioning to direct Unix command-line usage of commonly used, publicly available scripts. An understanding of genome structure and gene regulation is needed but advanced programming skills are not required. This class will meet in 607 IGB.

Medical Embryology This course is designed for graduate students and professional students with a sincere interest in the discipline. The course covers the general topic of human embryology, from the initial development of the germs cells, fertilization, and the key events that take place suring the devleopme of the conceptus and fetus leading up to birth. A large emphasis is placed on the clinical significance of those events as their basis in a vast array of fetal, neonatal and adult clinical pathologies.
