Section Info:
This course will focus on the burden of debt on everyday Americans in today?s society. Personal debt is one of the biggest problems facing our nation. An entire generation is going out into the world shackled by debt and unsure how to escape. We will read and discuss four books, noted below, which deal with a variety of issues surrounding debt. The students will lead discussions on the books and write five papers: one on each book, and then a final paper. The books are: (1) Broke: How Debt Bankrupts the Middle Class (K. Porter, ed.); (2) The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers & Fathers Are Going Broke (Elizabeth Warren & Amelia Warren Tyagi); (3) Maxed Out: Hard Times in the Age of Easy Credit (James Scurlock); and Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much (Sendhil Mullainathan & Eldar Shafir).
