TITLE: Italian Sociolinguistics The course focuses on current sociolinguistic trends in Italian society, analyzing them in a Mediterranean, European and global context from a historical perspective. Among the themes we'll discuss in the course are the development of the Italian standard and the complex relationship with the dialects today; Italian nationalism and language; Italian language, schools and the media; generational linguistic differences; old and new minority languages in Italy; linguistic law and institutions; "cool" Italian varieties. This is a lecture-discussion course. Articles in Italian and English will be provided, read and discussed.
