Graduate Seminar in Evolution. Students will read and discuss 'The Origin of Species' by Charles Darwin and the 'The Origin: Then and Now' by David Reznick. The purpose of this course is to discover (a) Darwin's primary insights into evolution via natural selection and (b) the extent to which his initial insights/understandings were born out by subsequent research in evolutionary biology. 1 hour. Topic: Graduate Seminar in Genomics. This seminar will first address the basics of genomics, that is, how genomes are sequenced, assembled, annotated, and analyzed. Supporting approaches such as transcriptomics and epigenomics will be explored to see how they add value to a genome sequence, and allow understanding of its expression in space and time. Examples from across the spectrum of life will illustrate the use of comparative genomic approaches from phyla to populations. Specific applications to topics such as speciation, global climate change, and personal genomics will be explored. WILL MEET IN 407 MORRILL HALL.
