Starting from the creative and explosive atmosphere of the Weimar Republic, considering fascist aesthetics, resistance, and exile experiences, observing the long term attempts to come to terms with the Nazi crimes, we will move on to see how differently life evolved in East and West, and end with a gripping crime story from the other side of the tracks in present day globalized Germany. Throughout the course, we will read literature both as a window into social, political, and cultural change in Germany, and as an active agent in this change, constructing the world in each instance in a particular way. A number of key films will provide additional perspectives. In reading, discussing, and analyzing some of the most fascinating works of this period, this course will also give you an opportunity to develop your German further.
