Topic: History and Memory of the Asia-Pacific War. Between 1931 and 1945, Japan waged an increasingly aggressive and brutal war across Asia and the Pacific. In the decades since, women and men in China, Korea, Japan, the United States and elsewhere have wrestled with their individual memories and collective histories of those tumultuous years. How have these events been portrayed in memoirs, literature, and film? What has been left out? How have film and literature reflected and shaped personal memories and national histories of the war? Is there a difference between memory and history? We will grapple with these and other questions by reading a variety of written accounts of the Asia-Pacific War as well as watch and discuss films produced both during and after the war. In addition to short weekly assignments, students will conduct original research on a topic of their own choosing that will culminate in a research paper and presentation.
