World Dance Forms

Credit: 1 hours.

Provides students with the physical study of various world dance forms. Topics reflect specializations of faculty, such as Capoiera, African dance, Balinese dance, and Chinese forms.

May be repeated in the same term to a maximum of 2 hours. May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 8 hours. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Using the rituals, protocol, and class structure of Umfundalai, a contemporary African dance technique, students will be exposed to three West African dances that originate from the Old Mali Empire.

Contemporary African Dance uses Umfundalai to provide students with a rigorous movement experience that will focus on alignment, rhythm, and style as competencies in proficient, African-informed movement practice. Restriction(s): Restricted to Dance or Dance major(s).

Hip-Hop dance technique will consist of the study and practice of Urban dance forms grounded in hip-hop culture. Students will explore the multiple dimensions of hip-hop dance as they train in the fundamentals of each form, learn its respective historical context, and access ways of incorporating individual ideas and lived experiences into their dancing. Restriction(s): Not intended for Dance or Dance major(s).
