Section Title: Sew and Flow Section Info: Topic: Sew and Flow. This course will be an exploration of fabric and fashion as a medium for dancers, artists, designers, and performers. Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of sewing to create ensembles to be performed in for November Dance 2014 -- a concert held at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Utilizing a variety of materials -- traditional, nontraditional, found, borrowed, or bought -- students will construct various costumes and be encouraged to explore the limits of their creations through improvisational and structured movement. Demonstration will include various methods of fabric manipulation, sewing (hand and machine) as a means of construction as well as investigations of various methods of improvisational movement. Emphasis will be places on the concept of sustainability as it applies to garment construction and choreography. The course has no prerequisites and is open to students from across the campus. Dance majors register for 1 credit and non-Dance majors register for 3 credits. Class meets in Noble Hall room 417.

The Everyday Arts Lab (EAL) is a new course initiative that explores the School of Fine and Applied Arts' public engagement capabilities. Open to undergraduate students across disciplines, students develop skills in community arts pedagogy, arts administration, and participatory action research. Through collaborative work, EAL students develop and offer a series of free community arts projects that offer young people from low-income backgrounds participation in arts inquiry programming. Students attend one weekly seminar on Monday and on Wednesdays offer two-hour after school arts workshops until 5:00 at sites in Urbana-Champaign, including Figure One, the Independent Media Center, and the Champaign Public Library. Open to all students.
