Introduction to the elements, principles, and processes of design. Students will investigate basic design concepts in four four-week workshops in craft/material studies. Design strategies will be introduced via a survey of basic techniques in metalworking, glassmaking, bookmaking, ceramics, and fiber. This course is designed for the non-art major who seeks an introductory hands on art making experience. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Section Fee: Materials Fees (Discovery) $35.00 Flat Fee. Credit: 3 hours Section Title: Experimental Painting Section Info: Topic: Experimental Painting and Collage. This course is open to all, and requires no prerequisites. It will focus on experimental painting and the use of alternative materials and experimental techniques in painting. Students will create works using modeled forms, reliefs, cut-outs, collaged elements, and found objects, along with traditional art materials. We will discuss artists and art movements, including Dadaism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Surrealism. Also covered will be innovative and non-conventional approaches to art, including vernacular art by self-taught artists working outside of traditional art movements and genres. Popular culture will also be a sphere of inquiry, where we will discuss and explore such expressions as tattoos, sideshow banners, and roadside art environments. Other topics might include Days of the Dead in Mexico, graphic novels, comic books, graffiti art, public murals, and the use of distorted and grotesque figuration in painting. Through the observation and examination of the world we live in, and the experimental use of paint and other materials in four projects, we will educate our eyes and learn to make visual associations that yield content and encourage further investigation. This course utilizes digital photography to explore the construction and reading of images as visual language. The student will learn to recognize parallels between image and language grammar to deconstruct our increasingly visual culture. Students will need a digital camera of some sort (from a cell phone to a SLR!). Students are expected to pay the lab fee required of all students taking photography. Needed materials will include a digital camera, an external storage device for images, per print costs when printing in the digital print lab. First Year Discovery Program Course.
