The supervising professor resides off-campus and interaction will be limited to once a week via conference call or through email exchanges. Once in the class, students must build a strong knowledge base on 'sundown towns' (communities that are, or were, all-white on purpose). Course requirements include reading "Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism", researching the professor's database, retrieving population data from census and "manuscript census", and updating the sundown town interactive map on the web. Additional research activities include visiting a 'probable' sundown town to research the claims made for/against the town's diversity (or lack of), updating Wkipedia or other web encyclopedias, and serve as an ambassador and a resource for knowledge on sundown towns long after completing the course.
