Composing w/ Movement & Video
Section Info:
This online course will use Compass, and it satisfies the following 2 General Education Requirements in Humanities & the Arts: Literature & the Arts, and Cultural Studies: Western/Comparative Cultures. This is a hands-on course for students interested in exploring the fundamentals of composition using movement and video. We will start from the perspective of dance, but no experience in dance or choreography is required. Using a critical, historical, and experiential approach, we will examine the relationship between movement and the camera and explore creative video-making that designs movement in time and space. We will focus on non-narrative videos and defining the ?vertical film form? as a compositional technique. We will look at music videos and the musical as a dance video phenomenon, and will examine the role of editing as a tool for making meaningful compositions. The class will include video projects, readings, viewings, peer critique, and online interaction. YOU MUST HAVE A VIDEO CAMERA (smartphone okay) AND BASIC EDITING SOFTWARE.
