Theory of electron microscopy and use for materials structure characterization and microanalysis. Physics of electron microscopes; kinematic and dynamic electron diffraction theory; defect image contrast; high resolution electron microscopy; electron probe formation; STEM; inelastic scattering and microanalysis. Practical experience via laboratory demonstrations and project assignments.

Prerequisite: MSE 405 and MSE 481.
