A field course to coral reefs in Belize. An introduction to the taxonomic groups, identification, and natural history of the vertebrates and invertebrates that inhabit and form coral reefs. Ecosystem processes and conservation of coral reefs will also be discussed. The field trip to Belize will be Sunday May 12 - Sunday May 19, 2013. Cost of the field trip is estimated to be $1800 and will be borne by the student. Prerequisite: IB 150 and consent of instructor. Student must be able to swim. Comprehensive introduction to the tools and skills required to transition from undergraduate to graduate school or a professional job in science. Emphasis is on acquiring skills required for independent scientific research, including how to propose and conduct a research project and how to communicate results by writing publication-quality manuscripts and presenting talks and posters at meetings.
