Topic: Versions francaises de l' Amerique. Examines representations of the United States (as a "real" or fictionalized country) and of "America" (as a cultural construct) in French texts from the 16th century to the present. Readings include novels, plays, poems, memoirs, travel narratives, and critical essays from a variety of political and ideological positions. Texts by Cartier, Chateaubriand, Tocqueville, Claudel, C�line, Duhamel, Morand, Sartre, de Beauvoir, Morin, Kristeva, Baudrillard, B-H L�vy, and others. Readings and discussions are in French.
