Advanced topics course, consisting of seminar or lectures in subjects not covered by regular course offerings; for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Possible field study in a prominent geological locality; includes in-class meetings, student-led presentations, and field trip; trips run during spring break, winter break, in mid-end May; dates depend on location.

Approved for both letter and S/U grading. May be repeated in the same or separate terms to a maximum of 12 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Field trip fee required for some sections.

Sustainable Organizations
Section Info:
A study of what makes organizations - corporate, non-profit, and government - sustainable. The course covers management, supply chains, business processes, value creation and efficiency. How entrepreneurs and companies interact with the environment and society is becoming more critical as expectations for environmental stewardship and social responsiblity rise. Large multinational organizations are the largest consumers of resources and therefore have the greatest impact both on the environment and society. The world's largest corporations are bigger than many of the countries in the world, changing the practices of these organizations poses a significant opportunity for global change. This course explores the notion of sustainability as a core business tenant, and how entrepreneurs and their companies are working to create and capture financal, social, and environmental value. The course will focus on large for profit organizaitons however the conclusions drawn are relevant to organizations of all sizes both profit and non-profit. Junior or Senior standing required. This section will have 3 live (Elluminate)sessions.
