Topic:Survey and analysis of representative, cutting-edge, and even scandalous artistic productions from across the former Soviet space, with emphasis on current Russian literature and film. Topics include the aesthetics and stylistics of Russian postmodernism and the evolution of that model, as exemplified by the works of Vladimir Sorokin and Viktor Pelevin; the rise and fall and rise of rock, pop, and hip-hop in the ex-communist countries of Eurasia; the intersection and interplay of oligarchy and the avant-garde; and President Vladimir Putin as a twenty-first century cultural artifact. Russian majors and minors should register for SLAV 452. Russian-speaking undergraduates and graduate students may opt to take RUSS 460, which will cover the same range of topics, but in Russian. This section restricted to Undergraduates. 3 credit hours.
