Section Title:
Program Management
Section Info:
Meets with MBA 505 PM. This course provides a socio-technical perspective, as opposed to a planning-and-control perspective, to the management of projects. As such, the course can be thought of either as a complement to a project management course (e.g., MBA 505 or BADM 589) or as a complement to organizations and management courses. Program management is becoming more important in today?s world where, more and more companies are realizing that managing complex and interrelated projects is a vital part of every organization?s success. Accordingly, in this course, the science of project management will be covered from a socio-technical perspective, which is a perspective that focuses on the importance of technical skills along with the skills needed for becoming an effective project manager who can form and lead a successful project team. Additionally, the course will focus on project portfolio management by focusing on how to become an effective program manager. In this context, the distinction between program management and project management is that projects deliver outputs whereas programs deliver outcomes; as such, program management is concerned with doing the right projects whereas project management is concerned with doing projects right. The course begins with an introduction to projects and the project management process with an emphasis on planning, and examining how managers plan, budget, schedule and control multi-project programs within an organizational context. Topics include project life cycles, organization and charters, work breakdown structures, responsibility matrixes; as well as the role of projects in organizations, alternative organizational systems, team management and leadership, and change management. The importance of project teams and human resource management in the process also is addressed. The art and science of project and program management process will be learnt through class activities, lectures, textbook, articles and/or handouts. The class assignments include weekly readings, in-class and outside-class related activities.
