Section Title:
Race and Criminalization
Section Info:
This course examines how and why criminalization is a racialized process in the United States that affects different communities of color in different ways. For instance, why do Native Americans have a different relationship to the criminal justice system? Why did the private prison industry in Arizona push for SB 1070 (AZ's recent anti-immigration law)? Why are women of color the fastest growing prison population? To discuss these and other questions, we will cover topics that include unlawful immigration, juvenile delinquency, prostitution, and street drug addiction. Meets with LLS 296.
