Course Title: Black Health in America: Diaspora, Disease, and Disparities This course will focus on African American experiences with sickness and health from the era of slavery to the emergence of race-based pharmaceuticals in the twentieth century. We examine the historical factors that have contributed to disparities in health and access to care among African Americans, as well as the ways in which science and medicine have been complicit in marginalizing African American bodies. Students will critically assess the ways in which legacies of neglect, medical exploitation, and limited access continue to frame minority health issues and shape public health policy.

Hip Hop: A Global History What are the social, economic, and political forces that have shaped the global Hip Hop cultural movement? How has Hip Hop both been influenced by and helped influence formations of race, gender, class, and sexuality across the world over the past several decades? This course explores the history and development of Hip Hop in the broader context of the post-World War II era by examining the relationship between the cultural movement and such phenomena as the Second Great Migration, deindustrialization, the rise and demise of the Black Power and Black Arts Movements, globalization, and mass incarceration.
