Topic: Masterpieces of 20th-Century Slavic Literatures: Progress, Technology, and Art. In this course, students will read some of the best works of 20th-century Czech, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, and Ukrainian literatures that address the themes of progress and technology, the human and the mechanical, and the role of art in a progress-driven technological world. Our focus will be on shorter works (poems, stories, and plays) by Stanis?aw Lem, S?awomir Mro?ek, Wis?awa Szymborska, Karel ?apek, V�clav Havel, Ivo Andri?, Miroslav Krle?a, Valerian Pidmohylny, Oksana Zabuzhko, and others. Readings will be complemented with several films from the region.
