We will read great science writing. Individual and team projects will incorporate multimedia methods. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Section Info:
Documentary is the fastest growing area of television journalism and non-fiction filmmaking today. Using weekly in-class screenings, discussions, readings, and writing, students will examine a wide variety of documentaries, looking at their styles, purposes, and storytelling voices, as well as learning the language and other fundamentals of documentary. The course will also cover the basic methods for creating a documentary and look at some possible work and career opportunities. Section Title:
Foundations of Digital Photo
Section Info:
Foundations of Digital Photography for Research and Fun. Just about everyone has some sort of camera these days but few, it seems, think much about why they are taking any given picture. Digital photography now plays a major role in any undergraduate research project and the impact of images can be heightened with solid understanding of the foundations and methodology of the medium. Clearly, photography can support a traditional research project which would help the results be diverse (compared to just text.) With effective illustrations, digital photography can make the research project more real for the receiver. The course, essentially, explores creative artistry as a means toward scholarship. Research, as defined by the University of Illinois encompasses this broader definition of scholarship to include creative works. In this hands-on class we will go beyond "traditional research" and produce "creative works" as scholarship. This is a hands-on class where digital photography will be explained and explored through discussion and assignments. No prior photography experience is needed. Cameras will be provided if needed. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to First Time Freshman students.
