CORPORA: Textual and Sexual Bodies in German Literature 1450 - 1750 This seminar focuses on Bodies?gender and sexuality, the body politic, the body of the book, bodies of text, real and imagined bodies, and animal bodies in German Studies with an emphasis on literary texts and their cultural contexts. The Body has become a central concept for cultural discourses, and early modern German literature is no exception. This course explores contemporary theoretical debates of how literary discourse is mapped onto the Body from 1450-1750 with respect to religion, gender, and ethnicity as well as to esoteric Bodies, such as demons, monsters, witches, and fabulous beasts. A key aspect of our investigations will be to examine how social, political, and literary discourses are mapped on the Body. In addition to the primary texts spanning the entire pre-modern period of German literature, theoretical investigations will inform our study. The thematic approach allows the course to survey important works of early literature as well as to explore significant genres ranging early prose novels and travelogues to drama. Several sessions will take place in the Rare Books and Manuscript Library.
