Introduction to applied action research within the social sciences and humanities with the subject of research selected from partner organizations in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and surrounding communities. Students establish a research question, conduct fieldwork using qualitative and/or quantitative methods, and complete a project of sufficient quality for publication or presentation.

May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours in subsequent terms. Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor.

Arts Experiences for Incarcerated Youth. In this course students design and facilitate a weekly arts (music, visual art, dance, drama) experience for youth detained at the Champaign County Detention Center. Course is intended for music education majors, art education majors, theatre majors, dance majors, and community arts minors, but all majors are welcome to enroll. Weekly class MEETS AND IS HELD AT THE DETENTION CENTER.

Project: Community Development with 5th and Hill Neighborhood Rights Campaign Students will partner with the 5th and Hill Neighborhood Rights Campaign to work towards the community's goals for the 5th and Hill toxic site and surrounding neighborhood. This research is based on the outcomes from the 5th and Hill Oral History research initiative begun during the FAA 391 Spring 2013 session. Our research will focus on the 5th and Hill toxic site and its potential re-development informed through: historical overview of local development literature, referencing of oral histories, and a collaborative visioning and design process with the 5th and Hill Neighborhood Rights Campaign. No previous design/community outreach experience is required to enroll in this course. Students will present their work to the public in a required symposium. Project: Planning for Sr. Housing and Services in the North First Street Neighborhood Designed for upper-level undergraduate students who have an interest in developing their research skills to create social change, this course will build on the outcomes from the North First Street research initiative begun during the FAA 391 Spring 2013 session. This course will introduce students to community engagement through a partnership with Mr. Hambrick, a benevolent neighborhood property owner and the City of Champaign. The project will focus specifically on the provision of housing and services for elderly residents of the North 1st Street area, a city priority. Students in the course will develop visions of the future for the area of North 1st Street between Church and Washington. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams in order to achieve the greatest benefit from the multiple skill sets and backgrounds that diverse group of students will bring to vision process. No prior knowledge of housing design, fine arts or urban planning is required. Students will present their work to the public in a required symposium. Project: Documenting the History of Environmental Impacts in Rockford's Ellis Heights Neighborhood Description: Students will partner with local residents and the Rockford, Illinois Housing Authority in researching the history of industrial impacts and environmental conditions along Kent Creek in the Ellis Heights neighborhood. Research will include a review of historical literature, analysis of neighborhood-level data over time, and a summary of current conditions and uses. Students will develop skills in understanding EPA assessments. Findings will draw attention to issues of water quality and management, as well as potential health impacts for residents. This process aims to inform and guide the work of Rockford Housing Authority in creating a revitalization plan for the Ellis Heights Neighborhood.
