Section Title:
Illustrated Books in China
Section Info:
Description: This course is about practices of reading and viewing evident in the late Ming period, especially with regard to illustrated books. The prevalence of illustration in printed books from the seventeenth century is often acknowledged, but the question why pictures were readily assimilated into the bodies of printed books at this time has not been fully examined. In this course, students will become familiar not only with contemporary scholarship on the history of the book in China and elsewhere but also with historical concepts of visuality and perception. The course is divided into three parts, each of which will focus on a specific question: Is it possible to construct and identify a form of visuality for late Ming times? How do verbal texts interact with visual images in printed books from the late Ming? Do pictures, untied from words, form a distinctive body of knowledge in the late Ming? Three short papers on each of the key questions posed by the seminar and based on readings done in class will be required.
