Topic: Family Change in a Changing World Around the world, family behaviors have undergone many changes in recent decades. These changes include the retreat of marriage in Western countries, the decline of arranged marriages in Asian countries, and a decline in family size around the world. This course will examine changes in the family across countries and their connections to other processes. Specifically, the course will focus on three main questions: 1) How are family behaviors changing over time?; 2) Why are they changing?; and 3) What are the consequences of these changes for well-being, economic development, and other outcomes? To address these questions the class will explore theories of family change and its ties to other social and economic changes, including theories of modernization, the second demographic transition, developmental idealism, and world culture. The course will also examine empirical work that uses demographic and ethnographic data to document family change and its connections to other processes.
