Arab-Israeli Conflict. This course is designed to help ssist students re-examine conventional wisdom through the use of evidence, analysis, and compassion. The Arab-Israeli Conflict will be examined on three levels. 1. Nationalism: the Israeli-Palestinian struggle for statehood on the same land. 2. Conflict: the inter-state conflict between Israel and its neighboring Arab states. 3. Systematic: the regional and international implications of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This course examines the conceptual issues associated with citizenship and immigration, considering current political debates from a variety of perspectives, empirical, historical, and normative. The majority of the course will focus on the United States, but we will also examine the immigration and citizenship practices of other nations as well. Among the topics to be considered include why people migrate; consequences of migration; efforts to integrate immigrants--socially, culturally, and politically--into their host societies; public opinion about immigration and immigrants; various citizenship traditions and rationales; membership, belonging, and national identity; and postnational citizenship. Not intended for students with Freshman class standing. Students may not receive more than three hours of credit for PS 300. This special topics course lies within the Comparative Politics subfield. Topic: Europe and the Mediterranean: Transnational Spaces and Integration. An interdisciplinary course designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The course presents Europe and the Mediterranean as interdependent, multicultural, and multinational spaces historically connected by cultural, economic, and migratory networks. It pays special attention to the role fo the European Union and its policies in the Mediterranean. By exploring these economic, social, and cultural bridges, the course introduces students to the complexities of an area to often represented in terms of mere opposition to the West.
