Topic: "The Search for Cultural Identity in Brazilian and Spanish-American Essay Writing." Meets with PORT 510. The search for cultural identity has always been a major preoccupation in Latin America, as it can be seen by the long essay-writing tradition that has been produced in the continent. Based on a corpus composed of a selection of seminal texts, produced both in Brazil and in different Spanish-American countries, this course aims at discussing the various facets of the process of constructing cultural and national identity. Emphasis will be given to the reading and discussion of these texts written by scholars from distinct areas of knowledge that have offered a significant contribution to the topic.
