Topics in Personal Identity In this course, we will investigate some of the philosophical problems of personal identity. Central to the discussion are the questions: what constitutes a person or self? Are there such things as persons? What makes someone the same person over time? Are persons identical to human organisms? Are the narratives we tell about ourselves constitutive of our identity? This course will explore the philosophical issues underlying these questions, from historical sources right up to the most recent work. These issues are not confined to the metaphysics of persons, but also involve neuroscience, psychology, and psychiatry. Accordingly, we will consider cases from both science-fiction thought experiments and science-fact studies in psychopathology; we will use these cases to help understand the implications of the competing theories of personal identity. The final third of the course will be focused on accounts of narrative identity and the problem of fictionalizing one?s identity. To assist in better understanding theories of narrative identity, short fiction and poetry will be used to supplement the philosophical discussions of narrative.
