Topic: "Latina/o Cultural Expressions: Borders, Citizenship, and the Musics of Mexican-America." Same as SPAN 240 and meets with ANTH 199. This course is designed to introduce students to important historical and stylistic musical developments as part of the cultural experience of ethnic Mexicans in the United States. To this end, we situate the aesthetic dialects of music-making within a larger social field where forms of citizenship/(non)citizenship are negotiated. We will cover various styles and genres--including corridos (the Mexican ballad form), Chicano rock'n' roll and hip-hop, and contemporary folk-derived styles (i.e. Pasito Duranguense, Nortena)--with attention to their historical, political, and musical significance. We dovetail this effort with a focus on important themes and concepts that aid in understanding present and historical conditions of incorporation and exclusion: national identity, race, gender, and migration.
