Non-Native Speech Segmentation This course is an advanced graduate seminar on adult native and non-native speech segmentation. Throughout the course, students will perform a critical examination of theories and studies on native and non-native speech segmentation. The course will focus on listeners? use of acoustic-phonetic/allophonic, phonotactic/transitional, prosodic, lexical, and syntactic/contextual cues to speech segmentation, including the learning mechanisms that allow listeners to extract these cues from the speech signal and the nature of the representations that result from such learning. Students will read and comment on a selection of behavioral and electrophysiological studies from the mainstream literature. Under the instructor?s guidance, students will design and (following IRB approval) pilot their own second language speech segmentation study. Practical aspects of psycholinguistic research, such as the creation of experiments in E-prime, the analysis of processing data, and the creation of research posters, will be discussed in small workshops. At the end of the semester, students will present their study in a poster at the Fourth SLATE Graduate Research Symposium (to be announced).

This graduate seminar explores current issues in the field of second and foreign language writing research and teaching. Students will learn about different theoretical frameworks through which L2 writing and L2 writing development have been conceptualized, including those that examine writing as process, those that focus on the socio-cultural aspects that impact the development of literacy, and those that explore the linguistic dimensions of written texts. Issues in L2 writing pedagogy will be addressed throughout the course and will enter discussions on such topics as: writing strategies, text and task types typical for L2 writing contexts, the relationship of writing to other modalities (especially reading and speaking), error correction and feedback in writing, the role of technology in supporting L2 writing development, and writing assessment."
