Prob in Comparative History

Credit: 4 hours.

Intensive comparative examinations of particular issues in the histories of multiple countries, cultures or periods; emphasizes methodology, the discipline of comparative history, and the nature of historiography in a cross-cultural and interdisciplinary context.

May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

For the last 500 years, the peoples of the Western Hemisphere have shared a common story. Disconnected from regular contact with Europe, Africa and Asia prior to 1492, this vast macro-region has been shaped by distinctive legacies produced by its global entanglements. This seminar will explore this broad topic that has played an important role in this vast region throughout its history. Themes to be covered include indigeneity; language and expressive culture; natural resources and economic systems. Special guest lectures and events sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study campus-wide initiative "Sovereignty and Autonomy" will enhance our work. An interdisciplinary course designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. The course presents Europe and the Mediterranean as interdependent, multicultural, and multinational spaces historically connected by cultural, economic, and migratory networks. It pays special attention to the role fo the European Union and its policies in the Mediterranean. By exploring these economic, social, and cultural bridges, the course introduces students to the complexities of an area to often represented in terms of mere opposition to the West. This course is a Jean Monnet Module, funded in part by the European Union.

This course introduces graduate students to oral history as a theory and method of history. In the last four decades, oral history has seen enormous growth in kinds of projects, techniques, and in the questions it asks about the past. While we look at newer oral history studies from the USA, Western Europe, South America and Africa, students will begin the challenging process of project design and field work in oral history.
