Seminars introduce students to aspects of globalization through a case study of a particular location abroad. On campus, students explore historical and contemporary aspects of the location abroad to prepare for their field visit. Abroad, students engage with local resources and people to better understand how the local site contributes to and is impacted by relevant global processes under focus. Course activities will include a field site visit abroad, discussions, lectures, short essays, student presentation, and final projects. Education and Development: A Case Study in Ecuador. This course explores the intersection of education and development and the role of NGOs in supplementing state-based education in Ecuador. The group serves their host community by offering an educational enrichment camp for the local children. Global Studies-Istanbul Turkey
Section Info:
Cultural Diversity in Modern Turkey This course will explore linguistic and cultural diversity of Turkey not only from a historical perspective but also from the lens of today. Because of the special geopolitical status of Istanbul, students will be able to get a better understanding of globalization, the interactions and conflicts between the East and the West, secularism and religion at the crossroads of history and modernity. This course meets the second eight weeks of Spring semester 3-12-12 to 5-2-12. Off campus dates are tentatively 2 weeks at the end of May, 2012.

The main theme of the course will be how individuals respond to incentives. We will study policies that have succeeded, or failed, to offer the right incentives to individuals (whether in a household, a firm, a village, or a country) and examine the impact of these policy decisions.
