Introduction to applied action research within the social sciences and humanities with the subject of research selected from partner organizations in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and surrounding communities. Students establish a research question, conduct fieldwork using qualitative and/or quantitative methods, and complete a project of sufficient quality for publication or presentation.

May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours in subsequent terms. Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor.

This semester the course will explore issues related to immigration and migration in Champaign-Urbana, and will conduct research on the needs of the local immigrant population. Arts Experiences for Incarcerated Youth. In this course students design and facilitate a weekly arts (music, visual art, dance, drama) experience for youth detained at the Champaign County Detention Center. Weekly class will be held either in Music Building 1140 or at the detention center. 1 hour of lab time each week is by arrangement. Not intended for students with Freshmen standing.

Exploring Recycled Materials & Structure. This course is intended to allow upper level undergraduate students to explore how research and public engagement can be translated into a spatial installation in a Kindergarten class at MLK Elementary School in Urbana. Weekly class on Tuesdays will be conducted in Noble hall and will focus on background and research. 1.5 hours of lab time each week is by arrangement. Class meets in room 317 Noble Hall.
