Advanced topics course, consisting of seminar or lectures in subjects not covered by regular course offerings; for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Possible field study in a prominent geological locality; includes in-class meetings, student-led presentations, and field trip; trips run during spring break, winter break, in mid-end May; dates depend on location. May be repeated in the same or separate terms to a maximum of 12 undergraduate hours or 8 graduate hours. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

Field trip fee required for some sections.

Scholarship of Sustainability
Section Info:
Lecture series on the major themes of sustainability from multiple speakers and viewpoints. Course consists of ten weekly lectures (Thursdays, starting 2-Feb-12, ending 12-Apr-12) and weekly discussions (Tuesday). Open to all students (graduate and undergraduate), counts as advanced credit for ESE majors. Students may not receive credit for ESE 497 Scholarship of Sustainability if they have received credit for any other course that has used the Scholarship of Sustainability series, past or present.

Section Title:
Field Expedition to Costa Rica
Section Info:
Field expedition to Costa Rica over spring break (approx. 9 days), and weekly seminar. The course will use Costa Rica as a case study to examine environment and sustainability issues. Coverage includes: rainforest ecology, land-use issues, sustainable agriculture, developing economies, and geologic features of the landscape (e.g., volcanoes; rivers). Restricted to ESE majors; non-ESE majors in LAS can apply to the waitlist (email tomkin@illinois.edu). LAS Students will be responsible for the field trip expenses in the amount of $1700 (this reduced fee includes an LAS study abroad Scholarship).
