The course will cover the following broad topics from a P-20 perspective: what is democracy; the politics of power and identity; critical pedagogy & participation in the democratic process: parents, youth, & community; and transformative school leadership for social justice. Some assignments include facilitating a class discussion/activity related to the assigned readings; participating in an interactive book group throughout the semester; and finally students will write a paper using a critical/transformative framework to develop an action plan for leaders to address a specific social justice issue in an educational setting (higher education, k-12, community/neighborhood, organization).
