This course explores the development and maturation of the art and architecture of the Islamic world during its rapid spread in the Middle Ages. We will investigate the Islamic aesthetic and how it influenced and was influenced by the architecture, sculpture, and manuscript tradition of medieval Christendom, particularly in the Byzantine Empire, the Mediterranean, and Spain. We will pay special attention to the cultural, ideological, and artistic intermingling between Muslim and Christian societies during the age of crusades and at the height of medieval pilgrimage.
