Section Title:
Visual Culture Global Context
Section Info:
Topic: Visual Culture in Global Context. This class travels from Toledo to Tahiti and back again, circling the globe in search of a wide variety of visual forms and media through which world cultures have expressed their distinctive sensibilities. Though we cast our net widely, we emphasize selected artworks in depth, so that we avoid the "if it's Tuesday, this must be Stockholm" phenomenon of too much information in too little time. Students practice basic skills needed to look closely at images, and explore the relationships between visual forms and cultural traditions, religious beliefs, and political and economic power. In addition, we seek to understand how past and present inequalities between nations in military, economic, and political power have affected our sense of the value of diverse artistic traditions, and have influenced the writing of the history of art and culture. All required readings and lectures are available online on our course website at: https://compass.illinois.edu/webct/entryPageIns.dowebct or on our campus library e-reserves: http://vufind.carli.illinois.edu/vf-uiu/Search/Reserves. SPECIAL NOTE: This class meets online on Wednesdays, from 5-6:20 PM at https://sas.elluminate.com/site/external/login/user. The first orientation meeting is in person, in Room 107 Art + Design building, Wednesday Jan. 18, 2012.

Section Title:
Fashion Design
Section Info:
Topic: Fashion Design. This course will focus on the apparel design process from rough sketches to finished, full color illustrations of mini collections. There will be a brief overview of other aspects of fashion including basic construction concepts, properties of textiles, illustration, history, manufacturing, trend forecasting, merchandising, and social psychology of dress. Class time will consist of a combination of lectures, demonstrations, critiques, discussions, video presentations and design assignments. The assignments will include four portfolio quality plates (representations of mini collections), a work of wearable art, partnering in the construction of an outfit made from recycled garments, readings, in-class mini construction projects and participation in a fashion show . This course is meant to give a broad overview of the many diverse areas of study and employment available to someone with an interest in fashion. The primary objective however is to experience the fashion design process by developing micro collections - beginning with a concept, followed by research, design (sketching), and finally, finished illustrations for presentation and critique.
