Section Title:
Sover & Autonomy in West Hemis
Section Info:
Topic: Sovereignty and Autonomy in the Western Hemisphere: National and Regional Struggles for Power, Identity and Space. For the last 500 years, the peoples of the Western Hemisphere have shared a common story. Disconnected from regular contact with Europe, Africa and Asia prior to 1492, this vast macro-region has been shaped by distinctive legacies produced by its global entanglements. This seminar will explore this broad topic that has played an important role in this vast region throughout its history. Themes to be covered include indigeneity; language and expressive culture; natural resources and economic systems. Special guest lectures and events sponsored by the Center for Advanced Study campus-wide initiative "Sovereignty and Autonomy" will enhance our work. Students from all disciplines and colleges are welcome. There are no pre-requisites. Meets with CAS 587 and HIST 502 at 912 W. Illinois.
