AFRO 199 Enlightening the Black Collegian 3 hours Instructor Rory James This course examines the Black collegiate experience via campus programming/events, workshops, guest lectures, and film. The objectives of this course are for students to understand theories and practices associated with African American student identity development; to familiarize students with campus resources/services that will benefit their emotional, mental, physical, psychological, and spiritual health; and to participate in culturally enriching activities. This course is designed for those students participating in the 100 Strong Program, a retention initiative of the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center (BNAACC).

Race and Sentencing Policy?This course will consider the basic theories of criminal punishment and the specific problem of racial disparity in sentencing, with a focus on African-Americans. We will examine the substantive and procedural rules that relate to sentencing in state and federal courts, including the use of sentencing guideline systems, and their impact on African-American defendants and communities. Students will be required to travel to a regional correctional institution or attend a sentencing hearing. Students will be evaluated on class presentations and a 10-page paper.
