Section Info:
Using a repertoire-based approach involving core repertoire and lesser-known works, this course will focus on aspects of opera production?staging and design--with the aim of understanding their impact on the interpretation of opera. Historical practices will inform our discussions as we consider major developments in production history since the middle of the 20th century. The October production of Elektra at Chicago?s Lyric Opera and performances of Daniel Catan?s Florencia en el Amazonas will be integrated into our course of study.
